Big Brother & The Holding Company first performed in the Haight Ashbury, San Francisco, in 1965. After their appearance at The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, Janis Joplin quickly became a phenomenon, and Big Brother made a real contribution to Janis’ rise to international fame. Big Brother’s classic 1968 album Cheap Thrills charted at #1 for eight weeks.

After Janis left the band in 1968, Big Brother continued to perform with a new female vocalist before disbanding in 1972. Having reformed with the original four members in 1987, they have performed world wide in Germany, Greece, England, Norway, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, Denmark, France, Brazil, Thailand, Japan, and throughout the United States.

In 2007 Big Brother joined “The Summer of Love 40th Anniversary Tour” with Jefferson Starship, Quicksilver Messenger Service, David & Linda LaFlamme (It’s A Beautiful Day) and the Grateful Dead’s Tom Constanten. The next four years saw a continuation of this multi band tour teaming up with Canned Heat and Country Joe McDonald for “The Heroes of Woodstock 40th Anniversary Tour”. This lineup performed at over 30 amphitheaters and sheds, including the original 1969 Woodstock site and Los Angeles’ Greek Theatre.

Big Brother carries on today with original members Peter Albin and Dave Getz, with Tom Finch and Tommy Odetto playing outstanding guitar. The very talented Darby Gould (Jefferson Starship) fronts the band, singing all of the classic material made famous by Janis Joplin and Big Brother & the Holding Company.

May 20th, 2017 at the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco, CA

In honor of the 50th Anniversary of Huckleberry Youth Programs, we are celebrating the successes of the last 50 years, while also eagerly looking forward to all that is yet to come. Over the next nine months, we plan to bring our donors, clients and community stakeholders along with us on this journey of celebration, commemoration and collaboration. Whether you like to spend your Saturdays relaxing in the park, enjoying live music or exploring one of San Francisco’s most historic neighborhoods, Huckleberry has an event for you!

For those of you who have been with us on this journey for the last 50 years, you may remember our 30th Anniversary Huckleberry Jam, headlined by Big Brother and the Holding Company. Well, we’re back…..with our original headliners and a host of other Bay Area artists, including Rozzi Crane, Krystle Warren and Call Me Ace, for a musical tribute to the young people we served during the Summer of Love and those we continue to support today.

As this is the first major event of our 50th year, the Great American Music Hall will be filled with both long-time Huckleberry supporters and those who are new to the Huckleberry family. All guests will be treated to an evening of great live music, dancing, light hors d’oeuvres and wine, all for a great cause. We are also thrilled to have the opportunity to honor David E. Smith, MD, Founder, Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic and a partner & supporter of Huckleberry Youth Programs from the very beginning. Our Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening will be Rosalie Howarth, Producer & Host of KFOG’s Acoustic Sunrise on Sunday mornings.

Doors will open for our VIP Meet & Greet @ 7:00 pm, General Admission @ 8:00 pm.

Empress-Theatre-5-14-16

On May 14th, 2016, BBHC will be at the Empress Theatre in Vallejo, CA.

Join us for a legendary performance by Big Brother and the Holding Company following the screening of “Little Girl Blue”, a documentary film about the life of Janis Joplin (scored 91% on Rotten tomatoes). The film is at 8:30 PM, and Big Brother & The Holding Company performs at 10 PM. Janis Joplin is one of the most revered and iconic rock & roll singers of all time, a tragic and misunderstood figure who thrilled millions of listeners and blazed new creative trails before her death in 1970 at age 27. This in depth examination presents an intimate and insightful portrait of a complicated, driven, and often beleaguered artist. Joplin’s own words tell much of the film’s story through a series of letters she wrote to her parents over the years, many of them made public here for the first time. Joplin was a powerhouse when she sang, and her recordings have never left the radio or the hearts of rock fans worldwide. A new understanding of a bright, complex woman whose surprising rise and sudden demise changed music forever. Doors open at 7:30pm.
