With mega-hits like "Piece of My Heart" and "Down On Me", most people think immediately of Janis Joplin. Not everyone knows that the singer at that time was part of the band Big Brother & The Holding Company, which earns just as much honor as the singer herself. Together they made the legendary album Cheap Thrills that the music magazine Rolling Stone lists as one of the 500 best albums of all time.
It all happened in the middle of the famous Summer of Love in 1967, when thousands of young hippies went to San Francisco. At the Monterey Festival (and Woodstock Big Brother & The Holding Company with Janis Joplin performed next to Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane and The Who.
Nearly 40 years later, Big Brother & The Holding Company is still showcased as one of the bands that best shaped the psychedelic sound late 60's, with blues and folk-rock fusion in a loose, energetic way.
The program is for the American singer-songwriter Cindy Peress, who has lived in Amsterdam since the 1980s, and effortlessly blends blues with rock, funk and soul.
